Plastic Free July

It's Plastic-Free July!

Let's be real here...going 100% plastic free isn't possible in the current modern world we live in. Accessibility to plastic free products, bulk goods, produce, etc all play a role. AND we actually do need some plastics (medical devices, electricity, automotives, appliances, electronics, etc). But there are many MANY products you can avoid that are packaged in plastic and we use on a daily basis so why not start there?!

Start with the BIG FOUR:

Switch to a reusable water bottle- we have a beautiful stainless steel one with a bamboo lid here. Why is this so urgent? According to the Container Recycling Institute, Americans are consuming water from disposable plastic bottles at a rate of more than 70 million bottles each day. Now multiply that by 365 days EACH YEAR. The amount of waste is staggering and easily preventable if everyone made the effort to refill a reusable water bottle. Have difficulty finding filtered water on-the-go? We've got you covered there with our GoPure portable water filter pods! No excuses ;)

Switch to reusable bags- we have some lovely organic cotton ones from produce to grocery here. Why? Americans use 100 billion plastic bags a year, which require 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture (and oil companies are almost single handedly ruining our planet!). Plastic film recycling is NOT the answer since there is virtually NO profit in it, most plastic bags will end up incinerated (releasing toxic fumes), in a landfill, or float away to ultimately end up in our waterways and oceans. Marine life often mistakes plastic bags for food, which causes them to choke or entangle in their intestines and they die. Morbid, I know, but if everyone thought about the potential consequences of each plastic bag they used, they probably wouldn't use them. This is a habit worth getting on board with ASAP.

Switch to a reusable tumbler for coffee and drinks or repurpose a mason jar you already have with our bamboo mason jar lids. Heading out to a friend's house or a bar? We've got you covered with our squishable silicone cups that can fit in your back pocket! Why?? Around 500 billion disposable coffee cups are produced each year (Source: Take3org.com) and that doesn't include plastic cups used for other drinks....mindblowing isn't it?! Plastic or paper drink cups are almost always NOT recyclable and even the "compostable" ones are going to landfill 99.9% of the time (unless the business actually offers industrial composting for their own cups). Swapping to a reusable cup, jar, etc is an extremely impactful swap because the resources used to make these cups is also staggering: 4 billion trees, or 35% of the total trees chopped down, are used in paper industries so that we can simply use the item once and toss it away. This is not something our planet can sustain.

Switch to our reusable straw & cutlery set! Why? Each day, more than 500 million plastic straws are used and discarded in the United States alone (Source: Take3org)! This statistic doesn't EVEN include the amount of throwaway plastic cutlery we toss each year. Used only for minutes, these lightweight single-use plastics can easily enter the natural environment and cause immense damage to our wildlife and ecosystems. By carrying around our portable straw & cutlery kit, you will never need to use these items again!

These are small changes that EVERYONE can make that will have an enormous positive impact not just during Plastic-Free July but forever. Make the swaps today and get a friend on board to do them with you.
